I loved Friday nights. I lived for the action that they brought; no matter how boring Tulsa got during the rest of the week, there was always something happening on Fridays. I usually found myself at the Dingo, or some party hosted by someone in the Shepard gang, or sometimes at Buck's, even though I'd been thinking twice about going there ever since Darry got custody of Pony and me. He drilled it into our heads over and over about how all it takes for us to get split up is one mistake and I try to take him seriously, but everyone goes to Buck's, and I don't remember the last time the cops were there.
So I was a little bitter about the lecture he gave me when he heard that's where most of the guys were going to. There was some big party going on for somebody's birthday or something and it was supposed to be awesome. But Darry made me give him my word that I wasn't heading there too... I'd planned to, but I wasn't big on breaking promises and Darry had more than enough on his plate without worrying about what trouble I was getting into. And that's how I ended up at the Ribbon, hoping to run into someone I knew or maybe I'd just watched the drag races. It wasn't often that I was bored on a Friday night.

I'd just finished my evening shift at The Dingo, and decided to head to the Ribbon to watch a drag race or two before I went home. I wasn't expected home for at least another hour, and I wasn't one known to be back on time anyway.. It was pretty empty tonight- I'm sure I heard some guys talking about a party tonight at Buck's, so I'm guessing that's where the crowd is at. Maybe I should head over there? I thought to myself, as I walked around searching for someone, anyone, who seemed interesting enough to hangout with.

I kicked a can down the street; I'd watched a few of the races, wishing I could take part in one but I couldn't find anyone to let me borrow their car. They were over for now but starting up again in about an hour, so maybe I'd get a chance to join in then. I needed my own set of wheels.
Catching up to the can I kicked it again, but it didn't go far before hitting somebody in the shin.
"Damn, I'm sorry about that," I apologized, looking up.

I looked up, ready to give whoever just kicked that can at me a real mouthful. Infront of me stood Sodapop Curtis; I'd seen him around before, but we'd never really spoke. He was apologizing. I guess I didn't have to shout at him like I first intended. "Don't worry 'bout it," I giggled, "This place is pretty dead, huh?"

"You can say that again," I said with a grin. I hadn't ever really talked to Leah before, but I'd seen her around a fair bit. She was right; there was nobody around. You wouldn't know it was a Friday night. I was bored, and finding something to fix that had been proving to be quite the challenge.

"I planned to watch some races before I go home," I told him, "but it looks like there ain't gonna be none for a while."
Watching cars go as fast as they could had never appealed to me in the past, but lately I'd been going to drag races a lot; they were real exciting. If I could actually drive, then maybe I'd take part too.

"Yeah, I was just watching 'em," I nodded. I didn't take part in them too often, but even just watching them was exciting. I was a total adrenaline junkie. "They said there'd be more in like an hour if you're sticking around for a little while."

Smiling, I told him, "I guess I'll just hang out here a bit longer, then."
Looking at Sodapop, I was wondering what was so special about him. I was constantly hearing girls, both Greasers and Socs, drooling over him as if he was some kind of God. He was handsome, I'll give him that, but he's just a guy. That's all.

"Good deal," I nodded. I was wishing I'd gone to Buck's; the Ribbon was a bust and I was sure Buck's was jumping right about now. I didn't have to be home for a few more hours, but I wasn't even sure I wanted to stick around for the rest of the races.

"I heard there's a party at Buck's tonight, are you going?" I asked him. If I couldn't find anything to do soon, I was thinking about going there. My sister wouldn't mind - hopefully.

"I wasn't planning on it, but it's gotta be better than this," I answered. Darry'd have my head if I went, and that's why I hadn't gone in the first place, but he didn't have to find out.

I shrugged, "My sister doesn't like me goin' there, says it's too rough for me."
It isn't too rough at Buck's however, or at least most of the time; she only says that to try keep me away, she doesn't want me getting into any fights or anything else that could get me in a messy situation. It's not as if I go around looking for trouble, though - it's more like it comes looking for me.
"That ain't true though," I added.

"My older brother's the same way," I nodded. I didn't get into trouble- well, I mean, not much compared to some of the guys on the east side. I was careful about it.
