It was usually pretty busy around the station, so sometimes I forgot how dead it could get. But when I got a shift during school and work hours, I remembered pretty quick.
There was nothing going on. No cars needed gas or an oil change, no customers needed me to ring them up, no Two-Bit to keep an eye on before he walked out with half the store... no nothing. I stared at the car magazine I'd already paged through about twenty times before placing it down on the counter with a sigh. I got up to stretch my legs more than anything, and grabbed a Pepsi from the cooler. I grabbed a bag of M&Ms too before returning to my chair and propping my feet up next to the magazine.
I opened the candy and tossed one up in the air, trying to catch it in my mouth and missing as the bell above the door chimed, announcing someone's arrival and distracting me.

Work started around nine in the mornin' for the early birds. Naturally, I showed up roundabouts half past ten. Being at the DX for years let you predict when the work started flowing in, and anythin' between the wee hours of nine and ten was as dead as a doornail. Soda was bright and early to work, settin' up the place and wiping down anything that needed a wipe-down (normally, nothing). That's what he was good for, Mr. Punctuality, being all punctual and whatnot, actually being at work at the time on the clock, doin' his natural born talent of openin' the DX for business.
I strolled right on in around half past ten, my usual time, tuggin' my shirt on. It was way too hot outside; there was no way I was goin' to stand outside in that mighty fine Oklahoma heat with a shirt on if I could help it. And it was only mornin', which was sayin' somethin' about what the heat would be like in a few shakes of a clock.
"What do you think you're doin', Sodiepop? Eatin' the company product? Shame on you. I oughta report you to Biffington for your disregard to the product." I gave Soda my best disappointed look, then shoved his feet off the counter for good measure as I passed by to clock myself in.
"Know anythin' good? How many babes have you chatted up while fillin' their cars?"

I grinned at Steve and put my feet back up on the counter, wishing we had more than just the one fan working. It wasn't even noon yet and I didn't want to imagine how much hotter it'd be getting. I hated the heat, but even so work wasn't usually too bad. As long as it stayed as dead as it was now and I didn't have to get up much. I'd make Steve pump the gas and whatnot.
"Hundreds and hundreds," I grinned, throwing an M&M at him. "You missed all the action, Stevie."

I walked into the DX on my break at the Dingo. I figured I'd come here to get some chips or something quick that I can eat on the way back to work. I picked up a couple things and went up to the counter and got some candy bars too.
